The NSW Government has announced the creation of the Great Koala National Park, protecting 475,000 hectares of forest on the Mid North Coast. This includes 176,000 hectares of former state forests, now permanently safeguarded for wildlife and biodiversity (NSW Gov, 2025).
This move is important for koalas, home to roughly 12,000 individuals and about 20% of NSW’s population, and for more than 100 threatened species, including greater gliders and glossy black cockatoos (WWF-Australia, 2025).
