In October, the Townsville Envite crew, joined by the Port of Townsville Environment team, planted 293 coastal plants along the foreshore at Nelly Bay, Magnetic Island (Yunbenun).

The aim of the project is to reduce coastal erosion and help build the natural resilience of the coastline to support turtle nesting habitat.

Preparation of these planting sites involved removal of all the weeds which are a food source for the local rock wallabies food source. To help prevent predation of our new plantings, biodegradable tree guards were used to protect the plants while as they become established.

The community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and more works are planned over the coming months.

This project is a community initiative led by Envite Environment in collaboration with Magnetic Island Network for Turtles, Townsville City Council and Queensland Parks and Wildlife.

This project is generously funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and Great Barrier Reef Foundation under the Climate Accelerator Grant and also supported by Port of Townsville.
